Introduction: Despite the increasing success of surgical procedures, individuals undergoing surgery still experience changes that may lead to complications affecting their quality of life. This study aimed to map the evidence on rehabilitation nurses' interventions in minimizing complications associated with individuals undergoing abdominal surgery.
Methodology: A Scoping Review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute® guidelines. Studies incorporating rehabilitation nursing interventions for adult patients undergoing abdominal surgery in a hospital setting were included. The search covered publications from January 2018 to May 2024 in English, Portuguese, and Spanish across databases such as EBSCOHost, Web of Science, Scopus, and B-on.
Results: Nine articles were included, highlighting the importance of a structured approach that encompasses the entire patient journey, from the preoperative period to hospital discharge. Key interventions included respiratory and motor rehabilitation programs, early mobilization strategies, self-care training, and targeted education, all of which demonstrated a reduction in postoperative complications and improvements in independence and quality of life.
Discussion: Patients undergoing abdominal surgery experience temporary disability, making the early and structured implementation of a rehabilitation nursing program essential. Specialized rehabilitation nursing care leads to significant health benefits, enhanced independence and autonomy, and a reduced length of hospital stay.
Conclusion: Rehabilitation nursing interventions for individuals undergoing abdominal surgery are essential for optimizing clinical outcomes and accelerating recovery while addressing each patient's individual needs.
