RehabilitationAbstract
Introduction: Population aging leads to an increase in chronic diseases, such as dementia, resulting in a decrease in the ability to carry out activities of daily living, making the person dependent on a caregiver. It is mostly family members who take on the role of caregiver and situations of overload may arise, as they do not have training or qualifications to perform the role. Nurses have the role of helping family caregivers and empowering them to respond in a healthy way to the changes inherent to the role of caregiver. This study aims to map and analyze scientific evidence on the intervention of the Rehabilitation Specialist Nurse in the family caregivers’ burden of elderly people with dementia.
Methodology: scoping review based on the Joanna Briggs Institute® methodology. The research was conducted in SCOPUS®, Web of Science™ and EBSCO®, and in gray literature – Open Access Scientific Repositories of Portugal, Google Scholar and MedNar.
Results: 13 studies were included, of which: nine advocate the implementation of psychoeducational interventions; one advocate psychosocial intervention; one home care intervention; and two interventions with technological resources.
Discussion: It was found that the implementation of interdisciplinary intervention programs demonstrates positive results in reducing the burden on family caregivers, their stress levels and depression.
Conclusion: These results allow us to reflect that the intervention of the Rehabilitation Specialist Nurse, inserted in an interdisciplinary team, can contribute to improving the assistance provided to the family caregiver.
