Abstract

Introduction: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) are an occupational health problem among healthcare professionals, especially nurses and healthcare assistant technicians (HAT). These injuries are associated with repetitive movements, incorrect postures and handling loads, resulting in functional limitations and absenteeism from work. Prevention, rehabilitation and reintegration strategies guided by Rehabilitation Nurse Specialists (RNS) can mitigate the impact of these injuries.

Objective: To identify the body areas most affected by WRMSDs, to differentiate symptoms between nurses and medical assistants, and to assess the risk of WRMSDs in the lumbar region in an Integrated Continued Care Unit in the Centre of Portugal.

Methodology: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive pilot study with 19 nurses and 22 HAT in January 2023. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and the Movement and Assistance of Hospital Patients Index (MAPO) were used to assess symptoms and the risk of back injuries.

Results: The most affected body areas were shoulders, neck, and lower back. The MAPO Index revealed a high risk of lower back injuries. A lack of appropriate technical aids and low use of transfer equipment was observed.

Discussion: Organizational factors, such as inadequate working conditions and lack of specific training, influence the development of WMSDs. The intervention of RNS, through training programs and preventive strategies, is essential to reduce the prevalence of these injuries.

Conclusion: The study highlights the need to implement proactive measures to prevent WRMSDs and the role of the RNS in creating safe working environments and promoting occupational health.
