Introduction: The experience of the dependency-independence continuum in activities of living is fundamental for the well-being of individuals with acquired physical disabilities. This study aims to understand these, linking them to the path toward well-being and the struggle for recognition.
Methodology: We conducted a phenomenological qualitative study with 27 individuals with acquired physical disabilities. We collected data through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using content analysis as proposed by Bardin, adopting a deductive-inductive approach.
Results: Five categories emerged: Dependency-Independence Continuum in Activities of Daily Living, Activities for Well-Being, Love, Rights, and Solidarity. Supportive devices and family support are crucial in promoting independence. Autonomy, interpersonal relationships, and the construction of a meaningful life contribute to well-being, even in contexts of functional dependency. Architectural and attitudinal barriers and difficulties accessing rights, compromise independence, belonging, and inclusion perpetuate the struggle for recognition.
Discussion: The results reveal the interconnection between the dependency-independence continuum, well-being, and the struggle for recognition, where love supports self-confidence, rights ensure self-respect, and solidarity promotes self-esteem. The emphasis on the technical dimension of rehabilitation care emerged as a challenge for nursing practice when not considering the real-life context.
Conclusion: The experience of the dependency-independence continuum is connected to well-being and the struggle for recognition, highlighting the need for a holistic approach that considers technical, social, and emotional dimensions for well-being.
