Politicas Editoriais

Our editorial policies were based on COPE's Principles of Transparency and Best Practices in Academic Publications. They can be consulted at: https://publicationethics.org/files/Principles_of_Transparency_and_Best_Practice_in_Scholarly_Publishingv3.pdf.

Peer review process

The review process is fully managed on the magazine's online platform. This process is doubly blind and anonymity is guaranteed throughout the trial process. The authors are informed of the stage of their article. The stages of the process are:

- Submission / Pre-analysis

Each article submitted to the Journal is initially analyzed by a member of the editorial committee regarding compliance with the rules established in the Instructions to Authors, and is returned for adequacy, in case of non-compliance with the rules.

If approved at this stage, the article is forwarded to the Chief Editor or Senior Editor who, with the collaboration of the Editorial Committee, will begin to evaluate the content from the scientific point of view and the contribution to the development of Nursing science.

- Peer review

The article is then forwarded to two external reviewers, who analyze it based on the Analysis and Opinion Instrument developed specifically for this purpose and give their opinion on the methodological rigor of the approach used. If there is disagreement in the opinions, the article is sent to a third reviewer. The reviewers' opinions are analyzed by the Editorial Committee, which, if necessary, indicates the changes to be made.

- Publication

The works are for publication only after the final approval of the Editor-in-Chief and Senior Editor. In this phase, a final evaluation will be carried out regarding the text, layout and formatting. Scheduling and preparing the article for publication and DOI assignment.

Any conflicts of interest must be clarified.

Identification and handling of allegations of misconduct

The submitted articles must be original and must not include manipulated data, plagiarism, manipulation of citations and falsification of data. If the editor is aware of misconduct related to a published article will follow the COPE guidelines when dealing with these suspicions.

RPER uses Ithenticate's Crossref Similarity Check to verify the originality of submitted articles. This verification is based on a comparison of the text of the article with documents existing in the Crossref and Ithenticate databases.

Ethical Considerations

RPER works to apply the Principles of Transparency and Good Practices in Academic Publications of COPE: Committee on Publication Ethics, always with the premise of maintaining high standards of publication of articles in the journal.

Authors must ensure that the research was conducted ethically and responsibly in compliance with all relevant legislation. Researchers should:

- present the results in a clear, honest manner, without falsification or improper data manipulation;

- describe the methodology used in a clear and unambiguous way so that the findings can be confirmed by others;

- fulfill the publication requirements by being an original work, not plagiarized and not published in another publication;

- take responsibility for submitted and published works;

- accurately reflect the contributions of the various authors to the work;

- sources of funding and relevant conflicts of interest must be disclosed.

These standards can be found at http://publicationethics.org/files/International%20standards_authors_for%20website_11_Nov_2011.pdf.

Editors are responsible for making fair and impartial decisions, regardless of commercial consideration and ensuring fair and appropriate peer review. They adopt and maximize editorial policies that encourage transparency and ethical principles. They protect the integrity of the published work by issuing corrections and retractions when necessary, and reject works suspected of alleged improper conduct of research, publication, review or editorial misconduct.

These standards can be found at https://publicationethics.org/files/International%20standard_editors_for%20website_11_Nov_2011.pdf.

Reviewers play a crucial role in this process. The process depends to a large extent on trust and requires that everyone involved behave responsibly and ethically. Regarding the standards of the reviewers, we adopted the COPE Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers, which are available at http://publicationethics.org/files/Peer%20review%20guidelines.pdf.

Protection of Research Participants: Informed Consent, Human and Animal Rights

The Portuguese Rehabilitation Nurses Association and the Portuguese Rehabilitation Nursing Journal support the protection policies of research participants of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) - http://www.icmje.org/recommendations/browse/roles -and-responsibilities/protection-of-research-participants.html.

Authors must ensure that the study they submit for publication complies with ethical and legal principles, both in the course of research and in publication, especially with the recommendations of the Declaration of Helsinki revised in 2013 by the World Medical Association (http:// www.wma.net/en/20activities/10ethics/10helsinki), the ICMJE (www.icmje.org) and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) (http://publicationethics.org/resources/guidelines).

In the case of primary studies, authors must demonstrate that the investigation was approved by the ethics committee of the institutions involved and that the ethical recommendations were followed. This information must be included in the text of the article and a copy of the opinion must be submitted at the time of manuscript submission. Suspected ethical misconduct in an investigation will be investigated and reported. Images, names, numbers of clinical files or other elements that allow the identification of study participants must not be presented. It must be clearly stated in the manuscript that the aforementioned rules were followed.

Patients are entitled to their privacy that must not be violated without recourse to informed consent. Identifying information, including names, initials or numbers of hospitals, should not be published, photographs or other information unless it is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or legal guardians) gives written informed consent to the publication. Informed consent for this purpose requires that an identifiable patient be shown the manuscript to be published. Authors should disclose to these patients whether any potentially identifiable material may be available on the Internet, as well as in the printed version after publication.

Non-essential identification details should be omitted. Informed consent should be obtained if there is any doubt that anonymity can be maintained. If identifying characteristics are de-identified, authors should provide assurance, and editors should so note, that such changes do not distort scientific meaning.

When informed consent has been obtained, it must be indicated in the published article.

When reporting animal experiments, authors should indicate whether institutional and national standards for the care and use of laboratory animals have been followed. Additional guidance on animal research ethics is available in the ARRIVE recommendations (https://arriveguidelines.org/arrive-guidelines).

Clinical Trial Results

RPER supports initiatives that contribute to better dissemination of clinical trial results. These include prospective registration of clinical trials in appropriate public databases. based on the recommendations of the ICMJE, RPER requires the registration of all clinical trials whose data are included in works submitted for publication in this journal.

The ICMJE adopts the World Health Organization's definition of a clinical trial, which is “any research study that prospectively attributes to human participants, individually or in group, one or more health-related interventions, with the aim of evaluating their results health-related ". This definition includes trials from phases I to IV. The ICMJE defines health-related interventions as “any intervention used to modify a biomedical or health-related outcome" and health-related outcomes as “any measure biomedical or health-related obtained in patients or participants".

Register of Clinical Trials

Registration in a public clinical trial database is a necessary condition for the publication of clinical trial data in the RPER, in accordance with the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE, http://www.icmje.org). Trials must be registered before or at the beginning of the patient recruitment period. Purely observational studies (those in which the assignment of a health intervention is not at the discretion of the investigator) do not require registration.

The clinical trial registration number (NRT) as well as the date of that registration must be referenced at the end of the article summary.

Register of systematic reviews

Systematic reviews must follow the PRISMA protocol (http://www.prisma-statement.org/Protocols/) and must provide the protocol registration number in the PROSPERO database (https://www.crd.york.ac. uk / prospero /) or similar.

Conflict of Interest and Funding Sources

It is considered a conflict of interest when professional judgment about a primary interest (such as the well-being of patients or the validity of the investigation) can be influenced by a secondary interest (such as financial gain).

Financial relationships correspond to the most easily identifiable conflicts of interest and are more likely to damage the credibility of the journal, the authors and science itself. However, conflicts can happen for other reasons, such as personal relationships or rivalries, academic competition and intellectual beliefs.

All participants in the peer review and publication process including authors, reviewers, editors and members of the RPER editorial board - must consider their conflicts of interest when fulfilling their roles in the article review and publication process and must also disclose all relationships that can be seen as potential conflicts of interest.

Authors should reference all sources of funding for the study described and its influence on the design of the manuscript or on the decision to submit for publication. The rigor and accuracy of the contents, and also, the opinions expressed are the sole responsibility of the authors.

Authors are required to disclose all financial and personal relationships that may skew the work. To prevent ambiguity, the authors must state clearly whether or not there are conflicts of interest. All authors must complete and submit the model for the Declaration of Conflicts of Interest (ICMJE Form for Disclosure of Potential Conflicts of Interest), available at http://www.icmje.org/conflicts-of-interest/. This information will be kept confidential throughout the review process of the manuscript by the reviewers and will not influence the editorial decision, however it will be published if the article is accepted. If there are no conflicts, the authors should mention this fact.
